Inter Milan advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord at the San Siro on Tuesday, completing a 4-1 aggregate win. Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu scored for the hosts, overcoming a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful Feyenoord challenge.
Thuram opened the scoring, continuing his fine European form. He jinked into the box and fired a shot into the top corner, giving Inter a 1-0 lead on the night and a 3-0 aggregate advantage. This marked the first time in his career that Thuram has scored in consecutive Champions League games, and he became only the second Inter player to score in both legs of a Champions League last-16 tie after Dejan Stankovic against Ajax in 2005-06.
Feyenoord responded with a penalty. Calhanoglu was penalized for a foul on Jakub Moder in the box, and the former Brighton midfielder converted the spot-kick to give the Dutch side a glimmer of hope.
However, Calhanoglu atoned for his error in the second half. He confidently converted a penalty after Thomas Beelen fouled Mehdi Taremi, restoring Inter’s two-goal cushion on the night.
Thuram almost added a third, firing a shot narrowly over the crossbar and later he struck the crossbar.
Inter’s Defensive Solidity and Attacking Depth
Inter Milan, Serie A leaders, will face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals in April as they aim to reach their second Champions League final in three seasons.
While Feyenoord posed occasional threats, with Yann Sommer saving Hugo Bueno’s long-range effort and Givairo Read having a shot blocked, Inter were largely comfortable. The penalty conceded by Calhanoglu was only the second goal Inter have conceded in this season’s Champions League.
The only issue for Thuram, was receiving yellow card for simulation.
Calhanoglu’s penalty saw him become the first Turkish player in Champions League history to both score and assist 10 goals. The victory highlighted both Inter’s attacking depth and their defensive resilience as they continue their pursuit of European glory.
